Liverpool to trigger £29.5m Jeremie Frimpong release clause

0 13

Liverpool are pressing forward with the £29.5m signing of Jeremie Frimpong and are expected to trigger his release clause with Bayer Leverkusen.

Mail Sport revealed on Monday that the Dutch international was extremely keen to join Liverpool — and the fact he was high on their agenda.

The Premier League champions are now moving forward with their interest and expect to land Frimpong on a long-term deal shortly.

Leverkusen were first aware of Liverpool's interest more than six months ago and he ticks a lot of boxes for Arne Slot. He is a wing back but they think he can also play in the front three.

The former Manchester City academy player, who also played for Celtic, was a key part of Leverkusen's Bundesliga title winning side last season.

Frimpong has played as an advanced wing-back for Xabi Alonso's side last season and contributed with 14 goals and 12 assists, while this season he has scored five and set up a further 12.

The truth about Liverpool's Jeremie Frimpong move and inside Trent Alexander-Arnold's farewell party

Frimpong signed a mega-money boot deal with New Balance in January of this year with the manufacturing giant seeing him as a future face of European football.

Mail Sport reported that at the time and revealed that contract was worth around £20million, putting him in the same bracket as Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi's deals with Nike and adidas respectively.

Scottish champions Celtic would bank a windfall of around £5.4m if Frimpong's release clause is triggered.

His former side are entitled to 30 per cent of the profit made from him after his £11.5m move to Germany in 2021.

Frimpong would be Liverpool's first move of the summer, but the Premier League champions also have interest in his Leverkusen team-mate Florian Wirtz.

The 22-year-old is one of Europe's most sought-after attackers with multiple clubs vying to sign him this summer.

Mail Sport reported this week Liverpool face that fierce competition for Wirtz, including from Man City, but Bayern Munich are still leading the race.
